About Othonas Tavrna

The moment diners step inside Othonas Tavrna, the ambiance strikes as genuine and effortlessly relaxed, balancing the rustic charm typical of a traditional Greek eatery with a subtle modern touch. Lighting plays a significant role in setting this welcoming tone, casting warm glows over wooden tables that invite both small groups and solitary visitors to settle in comfortably. While the overall atmosphere encourages leisurely dining, occasional noise from bustling conversation can make quieter moments less accessible, an aspect that might shape the experience depending on the time of visit.

Delving into the offerings, the Othonas Tavrna menu reveals a dedication to classic Cretan flavors presented with care rather than flamboyance. Dishes such as slow-cooked lamb and local cheese pies feel appropriately authentic, showcasing ingredients that reflect the region’s culinary heritage. Observations from various Othonas Tavrna reviews highlight a consistency in quality but also mention that portion sizes may sometimes lean towards modest, which could influence perceptions of value for certain diners. Photographs shared online often capture the vibrant colors and rustic presentation, giving a glimpse into the straightforward approach the kitchen embraces.

Throughout the dining experience, staff attentiveness emerges as a noticeable factor, generally blending courteous service with an unhurried pace that complements the easygoing environment. This can be particularly appreciated when navigating the more traditional dishes or seeking recommendations from the slightly reserved but knowledgeable servers. Although efficiency might lag during peak hours, the genuine effort to accommodate guests remains evident. As captured in many Othonas Tavrna reviews, the overall experience balances food, atmosphere, and service into a familiar yet distinct offering, representing a slice of local dining culture without venturing into the realm of spectacular or novel.

Exactly what we were looking for during our trip to Rethymno. Very friendly waiters in a nice atmosphere. We had snails, grilled sardines, bread and ouzo. Everything was very tasty. They offer gluten-free options and their homemade bread, regular and gluten-free, was awesome. Also you get some fruit and a raki for desert. Prices and portion sizes were very good, definitely a recommendation!!

Truly wonderful food with unique flavors that will satisfy even the most demanding tastes. The portions were just right — not too big, but definitely not small either, perfectly satisfying. The prices were excellent; we were five people, had wine, five main dishes, a salad, and two appetizers, and paid only €105. What really impressed me was the speed of service — even though the place was packed, our food arrived just eight minutes after ordering, and it was far from rushed. Everything was cooked to perfection. The staff were also very friendly and polite. As for the setting, it’s nothing fancy, just a typical Greek tavern, but located on a beautiful pedestrian street among the picturesque alleys of Rethymno. Bravo once again for such a great job — you truly deserve it!

Very nice place, friendly staff, great choice in traditional food and creative cuisine. Good price quality. Smoking and no smoking area. When finished we got some melon and raki on the house. All and all, would recommend

The best authentic Greek restaurant in town! The service and the food is outstanding! We went there almost every day during our vacation! 10/10! The food has such a good quality and is creative. Next time in Rethymnon we will definitely come back!

I had the absolute pleasure of dining at Othonas for ten days in a row during my stay in Rethymno, and I can confidently say it was one of the highlights of my trip to Crete. Nestled in the charming old city center, Othonas combines traditional Cretan hospitality with a refined culinary touch that makes every visit memorable. Over the course of ten days, I had the chance to try nearly the entire menu, and not once did I feel repetitive. Each dish was unique, perfectly balanced, and full of authentic flavors. From the slow-cooked lamb and fresh seafood to the vibrant salads and house specialties, the food consistently exceeded expectations. Portions were generous without sacrificing presentation or quality. The staff deserve special mention: warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about sharing Cretan culture through their cuisine. They happily explained ingredients, recommended local wines, and always made me feel like a valued guest rather than just a customer. Dining here felt less like eating out and more like being welcomed into a friend’s home. For anyone visiting Rethymno, Othonas is more than a restaurant—it’s an experience. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's at another level. Just try

Although the place was completely full they found a place for us shortly. The food was great and came quickly. The owner made effort to find subsistence for a component in a salad we wanted but had problem with. After the dinner we had a conversation with the owner, great man and proud Greek. We enjoyed the meal and definitely recommend.

Went here twice and the food and service never disappoint! Always a server available with a smile for any of our requests. The servings are huge so second time we just shared a starter and gyros. Love the cheesecake and ouzo dessert they always give on the house too!

We found this place just by walking in the Old town. It’s located in a lovely street, on a cozy shadow of the trees. So we loved the atmosphere. The staff was super helpful and so welcoming and friendly! But the most important is the quality and taste of food. It was just excellent! I took grilled octopus and my husband had chicken gyros — these are definite must try. Pita freshly baked, Greek salad freshly cut. Everything fresh and tasty. We will definitely come by the next days. Strongly recommend
